L’isola di Bouvet

[ITA] L’Isola di Bouvet è un progetto in cui un gruppo di quattro adolescenti è chiamato a simulare per la durata di una settimana le condizioni di insediamento e colonizzazione di una terra deserta. Il lavoro è stato pensato per essere riallestito in luoghi sempre diversi e con nuovi gruppi di coloni [ENG] The Island of Bouvet is a project where a group of four teenagers is asked to simulate for a week the conditions of settlement and colonization of a desert land. The works has been conceived to be restaged in different places with different groups of colonists.

[ITA] L’isola di Bouvet è una terra disabitata con una superficie di nemmeno 60 chilometri quadrati. Tra i punti estremi del nostro pianeta è il luogo più remoto da ogni altra terra emersa. Fu intravista la prima volta alla fine del ‘700, quando la si credette un piccolo arcipelago; nessuno la incontrò più nella sua rotta per quasi un secolo, quando finalmente riemerse dalle nebbie dell’Oceano Atlantico meridionale e si rivelò per quello che era: un’unica terra di ghiacciai a picco sul mare.

Ho immaginato che questa piccola landa fosse il territorio ideale per insediare quattro giovani adolescenti e per guidarli in un rituale di colonizzazione che prendesse come misura la fragilità delle loro articolazioni, la velocità dei loro sguardi, la leggerezza dei loro passi; un rituale che si disvela per codici segreti e trappole coreografiche. Da spettatori non ci è concesso accedere al mistero ultimo di questa formula che va piano piano formandosi; possiamo, solo alla fine, intravederne il risultato, e credere che quel ghiacciaio esista davvero, da qualche parte, in quello stesso momento.

[ENG] The Island of Bouvet is an uninhabited land of nearly 60 km2. Among the extreme points of Earth, it is the most remote island. It has been seen for the first time at the end of the XVIII century, but then nobody met it again for almost 100 years, when it finally appeared from the fogs of the Southern Atlantic Ocean, appearing to be just a land of glaciers.

I imagined this land to be the ideal place to set four young teenagers and lead them through a ritual of colonization, taking the frailty of their joints, the speed of their eyes, the lightness of their steps as units of measurement; a ritual that unravels by secret codes and choreographic traps. As spectators we’re not allowed to access the ultimate mystery of this formula slowly taking shape; only at the end we might glimpse the result, and believe that glacier really exists, somewhere, in that very moment.
